Heat Relief… Again

If you are ready for this latest stretch of high temperatures to end, you are finally in luck! We are under an Excessive Heat Warning again this afternoon in Douglas, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties through Tuesday evening. The good news is that we are looking at a more typical run for August temperatures starting Wednesday. The concern for the last few days has been that the heat index could reach 115 degrees across most of Kansas and Missouri. Let me move off topic to explain how the heat index works for those of you who might not know. The heat index puts a number to the combination of the air temperature and the relative humidity. This gives us an idea how hot it feels to our body when it extremely humid. Sweat is our body’s natural way of cooling off. If there is more moisture in the air, or higher humidity, it is harder for the sweat to evaporate. When that is the case it is not as easy for our bodies to cool off. The combination of high humidity and higher temperatures make the heat feel more intense to our bodies. In some of the drier climates, the lack of humidity makes it easier for the sweat to evaporate making the heat index feel COOLER than the actual air temperature. Now back to the topic at hand. We are looking at a boundary of slightly cooler and drier air moving this direction through the day today making an impact on our weather as early as this evening. Along with cooler temperatures our rain chances will begin to go up for the afternoon through the end of the week as a stationary front slowly drifts through eastern Kansas. This boundary should stick around long enough for us to see temperatures remain at or below the average high temperature of 91 degrees for this point in August.
