Jayhawk drag queen likes Travolta as a woman

¢ A Miami drag queen and Kansas University alumnus thinks John Travolta does OK playing a woman in “Hairspray.” The drag queen, Elaine Lancaster, is quoted in today’s Miami Herald._At first when he came on screen you thought ”Oh, it’s John Travolta in drag.” As the movie progressed, he became more of a Turnblad than an actor. I don’t understand how somebody supposedly from Baltimore had such a deep Southern accent. He sounded like me, from the country back roads! Toward the end he did a little dance routine on the Corny Collins show. I can’t imagine him maneuvering as well as he did in that fat suit. Of course there’s no one like Divine (Harris Glenn Milstead). Divine was born into roles that John Waters created. I don’t think he was trying to be Divine, but a Turnblad. He made it his own character._
