Trial begins in beating death

Jury selection began this morning in the trial of a Lawrence man accused of beating and killing his girlfriend, 37-year-old Linda Begay.Assistant Douglas County District Attorney Trent Krug questioned potential jurors for more than two hours this morning in the trial of Christopher Belone, who faces charges of second-degree murder, kidnapping and obstruction.Belone’s attorney, Greg Robinson, began questioning the jury panel at 11:40 a.m. Jury selection is expected to be completed today.Prosecutors accuse Belone of beating and dragging Begay from a friend’s trailer home on July 29 in the Gaslight Village mobile home park, 1900 W. 31st St. Begay died days later at a hospital of peritonitis, an abdominal infection caused by blunt trauma, Douglas County Coroner Erik Mitchell testified at an earlier hearing. Some jury candidates have been dismissed for work obligations and others reasons, and three women candidates were allowed to leave the pool because they cited some personal history with domestic violence that possibly could compromise their abilities to be impartial. In earlier hearings, witnesses have testified that Begay was intoxicated and fell asleep at the friend’s home. Prosecutors allege Belone then became jealous.Lawrence police officers taped an interview with Begay before she died in the hospital. On the recording she identified Belone as the person who injured her.In earlier hearings, Robinson has argued that prosecutors do not have evidence to put Belone at the scene and has questioned Begay’s credibility based on the recorded interview. Officers had to interview her a second time because they said she was too intoxicated originally.
