Teacher accused of sex waives preliminary hearing
A former Lawrence High School teacher accused of having sex with a 15-year-old student waived her right to a preliminary hearing this morning.During a brief court appearance, the woman's attorney, James Rumsey, asked Douglas County District Judge Stephen Six to schedule her arraignment for June 19 so the defense could complete discussions that have been ongoing with prosecutors. Six complied. The woman, who was in her first year teaching at LHS, was arrested March 16 and charged with two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and two counts of criminal sodomy. She is free on $15,000 bond. Prosecutors allege the acts occurred between August and mid-March.The Lawrence school board in April voted not to renew her contract for the 2007-2008 school year, and she had been suspended when the allegations surfaced. The Journal-World does not print the names of people accused of sexual crimes unless there is a conviction.
