Police cite man for leaving dog in hot car

Law enforcement report¢ A Kansas City, Mo., man was issued an animal cruelty citation after a 22-year-old Lawrence woman saw the man’s Golden Retriever in his car parked in the 100 block of E. Seventh St. Saturday.The dog, which was in the front passenger seat, was panting heavily, the witness told police. The car was not running. Its windows were open about one inch and the vehicle’s sunroof was also open.Kansas law states that an animal cruelty citation can be issued when an animal is left in a vehicle in extreme weather conditions, which include a temperature of less than 30 degrees or more than 80 degrees.¢ Two vehicles were involved in an injury accident at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Kwik Shop gas station, 845 Miss. A car driven by Meredith Hazelton, 21, of Overland Park, Kan., was backing out of a parking stall on the south side of the business when she and a car driven by Carol Brune, a 61-year-old Lawrence woman, collided. Brune, who had just backed out of her own stall on the east side of Kwik Shop, told police that she had pulled out of her space and was about to drive west onto Ninth Street when the accident occurred. A witness told police he thought the accident was caused by Brune driving too fast in the congested parking lot.Hazelton’s passenger, Erin Stephenson, a 22-year-old St. Louis woman, complained of neck pain and was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
