More details released in vehicle death of Tonganoxie woman

The Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office released new details today in the Feb. 14 wreck that killed 19-year-old Tonganoxie resident Amanda Bixby.According to the report, Bixby died when a silver Toyota 4 Runner driven by Ricardo Flores, Lansing, ran a stop sign while headed north on 158th Street, crossing two eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 24-40. He then struck two westbound vehicles, killing Bixby and injuring five others.Flores’ car struck a 2004 Dodge Durango SUV, driven by 41-year-old Billy Nichols, of Bonner Springs, on the driver’s side, pushing the SUV off the road into the north ditch.A passenger in the truck, 16-year-old Katlynn Witt, was admitted to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., and required surgery on her left foot. Nichols’ wife, Dawn, suffered a laceration to her forehead, while Nichols and the other passengers suffered “whiplash type injuries,” the report said.Then Flores’ SUV struck Bixby’s Ford Taurus along the passenger door. “Amanda was deceased when emergency personnel arrived on the scene,” the report said.Flores was arrested and booked into jail for vehicular homicide, not having a driver’s license and failing to stop at a stop sign. He and his father-in-law, Jose Meza, were not injured.
