¢ Lawrence police seized another weapon- this time an AK-47 assault rifle - during the weekend in a parking lot used by downtown club-goers. Police were on patrol about 12:15 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of Borders, 700 N.H., when they saw the weapon inside a parked vehicle. Around 3 a.m., they saw two men approach the car and made contact with them. They seized the gun and arrested a 19-year-old Grandview, Mo., man, Desmond Rashard Clark, for having a weapon near a bar. Since the beginning of the year, police have seized guns repeatedly from cars parked in the 700 block of New Hampshire, an area often used by patrons of Last Call, 729 N..H. It prompted the city to change its ordinance covering weapons near bars to make it more specific. In May, an unidentified person fired gunshots inside Last Call, but no one was injured. The police report from Sunday's incident didn't specify whether the men had been at Last Call, but the club closes at 3 a.m.- the time the men approached the car - which is an hour later than the closing time of other downtown bars.¢ Lawrence Police arrested two Kansas University students for sexual battery after a woman told police the men touched her inappropriately around 1:50 a.m. Saturday as she was waiting for pizza at The Wheel, 14th and Ohio Streets. The men also were found with fake IDs and arrested for making a false driver's license application. They were released on bond and ordered to appear in court Sept. 18. ¢ Two Lawrence residents, Stuart R. Doores, 51, and Rita L. Doores, 49, both of 741 E. 661 Diagonal Road, were booked into jail during the weekend on arrest warrants for possession of cocaine, possession with intent to sell a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failure to pay a drug-tax stamp.¢ Someone broke three windows in a portable building at Sunset Hill School, 901 Schwarz Road, between 5 p.m. Friday and 1:20 p.m. Saturday, causing $300 damage.¢ Paramedics treated a 26-year-old Overland Park man after he was struck in the head with a beer bottle around 1:25 a.m. Sunday during a fight at It's Brothers, 1105 Mass. The suspect is still unidentified as of this morning. ¢ A 21st birthday celebration turned violent during the weekend for a Kansas University student. The man suffered possible internal injuries and was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital after being beaten sometime around 1:55 a.m. Monday in the 1300 block of Ohio Street. A 21-year-old friend also was injured. Police are still trying to determine exactly what happened. The men weren't able to tell officers how they were hurt. Police interviewed witnesses in the area and believe two men- still unidentified - are the suspects. Witnesses reported seeing two men throw a glider bench through a window around 2 a.m. on the front porch of a home at 1300 Ohio and believe that incident may be connected to the fight.¢ Three unidentified boys are suspected of breaking a window around 10:30 p.m. Sunday on the east side of the Eldridge Hotel, 701 Mass., causing about $800 damage. Witnesses saw the boys running south away from the scene after the window was broken. Burglaries and thefts:¢ 300 block of Funston Avenue: A 17-year-old boy's CD player and amplifiers, valued at $1,400, were stolen from a parking lot between 2:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. Saturday. ¢ 600 block of Mass.: M & M Office Supply, 623 Mass., reported a $1,795 computer server stolen between Jan. 16 and Aug. 22.¢ 900 block of Arkansas: A 21-year-old Kansas University student's Toyota Corolla, valued at $16,000, was stolen between 3 a.m. and 6:20 a.m. Saturday.¢ 700 block of Locust St.: A 20-year-old Ottawa woman reported a purse and handbag, valued at $1,314 total, stolen from her vehicle between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Saturday. -contributed by [Eric Weslander.][1] [1]: http://www2.ljworld.com/staff/eric_weslander

To rousseau108....you weren't there that night and I was. He is not a fighter and doesnt' mouth off. He most definitely didn't start that fight and you should learn some sympathy. Why are you defending violence. It's wrong even if provoked.

Not to say anyone deserves to get injured, but from my experience, most of the people that go out drinking for their 21st birthday tend to overdo it and can become really obnoxious. maybe he had too much liquid courage and mouthed off to the wrong people, or even started the fight he couldn't finish.

To the f@#kers who beat my brother on his 21st birthday: I pray that you get caught and that justice is served. If they don't catch you, I hope you are able to live with yourselves knowing what extensive injuries you have done to another human being. You are a disgrace to the town of Lawrence and in some form or another this will come back to haunt you at some point in your life. Hang in there little-bro....this too shall pass:) Love you.

Last Call needs to be shut down, it promotes this kind of crowd that makes the rest of us not safe downtown. The owner does not care what happens in his bar as long as he makes money. This town is getting more and more gangster wanna bees and its time the police let them know to move on out of Lawrence.

Thanks to Bush and his lapdog congress, assault rifles are now completely legal. The NRA LOVES assault rifles. Tell me, who exactly (save SWAT teams) needs an assault rifle? They are designed for warfare, not personal defense.

To tell the truth, I'd rather people leave their guns in plain sight so the police can catch them instead of hiding them away where you'd never know someone had an AK-47 until it was pulled on you.

And as far as the M&M theft, sounds like an inside job to me. Eight months? And it still took another two weeks to report it? Hmmmm.

Why is that place allowed to operate? Surely the city can find a reason to shut it down....come on!

I'm going to city hall tomorrow to apply for a permit to open a kevlar jacket stand in front of Last Call. I'll make a fortune.

"a $1,795 computer server stolen between Jan. 16 and Aug. 22"

Since no one noticed it missing for half a year, maybe it's true value is $0.

These people are idiots. Why do they keep insisting on parking at Borders with their weapons laying out for everyone to see?
