Police foil suicide attempt

A Lawrence police officer held on while a man dangled over the north side of the Kansas River Bridge this afternoon.Around noon, police received a call of a possible suicide attempt on the bridge. When they arrived, an officer found a man hanging by one arm over the bridge while his bike lay strewn upon the sidewalk, said Kim Murphree, spokeswoman for the department.The officer grabbed the man’s arm and held on until other officers arrived to assist. The man was eventually pulled back onto the sidewalk and taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for a mental health evaluation.In other news:¢ Lawrence police responded to the 100 block of Indian Avenue around 3:40 p.m. Tuesday after a 22-year-old Lawrence man allegedly hit another man in the head with a metal tape dispenser.The man was eventually arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery.
