KU student attacked while walking alone

An attacker pushed a 21-year-old Kansas University student to the ground and groped her early this morning as she was walking alone through a campus-area neighborhood, Lawrence Police said. The woman was walking about 12:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of Louisiana Street when the man pushed her to the ground and touched her on the outside of her clothing, according to a police report. She told police she screamed and the man ran away on foot. She described the suspect as a white male, between 5 feet 4 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall, 160 to 200 pounds, wearing a tan outfit and blue jeans."It's always a good idea to walk with somebody," LPD spokewsoman Kim Murphree said. The attack comes on the heels of other [ violent crimes][1] reported in campus-area neighborhoods in the past week. But despite the similar time frame, the type of crime and suspect descriptions vary. For example, the robbery and beating of an 18-year-old Lawrence High School student also happened in the 1200 block of Louisiana around the same time of day, 12:15 a.m., on Sunday. But in that case, there were four suspects, and the students' wallet was stolen. In the most recent attack, the woman reported nothing taken.Other recent crimes:¢ A home-invasion robbery Tuesday night in Meadowbrook Apartments. A group of men said they were about to start a card game when there was a knock on the door and a man armed with a gun came in, followed by another man. One suspect was described as a black male in his early 20s, about 6 feet 1 inch tall, between 180 and 200 pounds, wearing a light blue football jersey and baggy blue jean shorts. The other was described as possibly an American Indian or Hispanic male, in his early 20s, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a stocky build, wearing a big black T-shirt and long, blue jean shorts.¢ A home-invasion robbery Saturday night in the 1300 block of Tennessee Street. A KU student said there was a knock on the door and two men came in armed with guns. One held a gun to his head while the other cleaned out the apartment, he said.¢ A beating Sunday night involving 7 to 10 suspects who barged into a home in the 1200 block of Tennessee Street armed with a baseball bat. A resident of the home said he believes it was a group of men who had been involved in a fight at the home the previous night during a party.-contributed by Eric Weslander. No self respecting "thug" would attack someone in broad daylight - it 's a very stupid thing for a criminal to do. So stop whining about the criminals attacking in the dark.

An interesting thing I noticed the other day - many young people are more interested in talking on their cell phone than paying attention to their surroundings. "Paying attention to your surroundings" is also called "situational awareness". SA is term many military and peace officers will know - it tends to keep them alive. If everyone had a good sense of their surroundings there would be a large drop in crime.

Day or night, women are at risk of becoming victims of violent and disrespectful acts perpertrated by "men". I know of an incident far worse than the one above that happened to Jr. High age girls in "good old Lawrence" who were walking home from school in a group for safety in the late afternoon.

"the woman reported nothing taken"

Does her sense of security count?

lawrence_citizen 11 years, 7 months ago

Apparently someone already took her common sense, walking anywhere at that time of night is not safe.

Right, blame the victim. It is not very brilliant to walk alone after dark, but the question that should be asked is why? Do the streets automatically belong to thugs when the sun goes down? "They" are out there, so we should be locked in our homes where they cannot hurt us?

Maybe there should be citizen patrols if the police presence isn't enough to deter these criminals.

A transient population like the one in this town is unfortunately ideal for commiting/getting away with crime. I'd bet a dollar that at least one person in each of the crimes that have made the news lately from the student areas is a student of KU or Haskell. Where I went to school, over 50% of crime in the town was committed by students of the college.

Mr. Ramirez -

We cant just go around blaming the Topekan commuters for all this deliquent behavior.....

Do I think some pretty questionable people drive in to Lawrence from Topeka from time to time? Ok, ya. Sure.

Is it possible that a large percentage of Topeka residents are resposible for the recent acts of violence and theft in our city? Yes, I think it's possible.

Am I going to automatically assume that each time a young woman is groped that a Topekan did it? No. No I won't.

You should be more careful about your comments, Mr Ramirez. Not to mention ecouraging readers to fire modified weapons at people. . .

Why hasn't LPD staked out this block? It seems that an awful lot of criminal activity has taken place around the 12-1300 block in the past week or two. I can imagine they've got other irons in the fire, but this seems to be a pretty active area.

roger_o_thornhill 11 years, 7 months ago

Why not a gun? As long as you carry it in plain sight it is ok, right. Isn't that what crazy ol' Bill Burroughs used to do?

Seriously though, there are way too many people living in the "student ghetto". Maybe some foot/bike cops could help. KUcops or LPD, whoevers jurisdiction. Maybe one of those substations like used to be in the former downtown McDonalds. Plus more lights. Some parts of "the ghetto" are pretty dark.

I also gotta say that the person who groped this lady is really pathetic. Hear that buddy, p-a-t-h-e-t-i-c! Come try to grope me and see what happens.

hey, Marion; can a woman still get one of those two-shot derringers? we should equip female ku students walking in that area! give extra points for hitting crooks with prior convictions. should run off the baddies and a two-shot derringer is pretty small but deadly.

-To the Lawrence Police Dept.-

Do your JOBS!!!! PROTECT AND SERVE!! That means get off your asses and patrol an area that obviously needs patroled. Stop sitting in your cars waiting to write tickets! There is more to being a police officer than just writing tickets for someone having a tail light out on their car.

NICE JOB LPD. Keep up the crappy work! Who are you serving and PROTECTING!!??

BlackVelvet 11 years, 7 months ago

Hey rooga.....did junior high let out early today? you need to go back to class! If LPD WERE staked out in a specific area and a crime occurred somewhere else, you'd likely bitch about it. There are only so many cops to go around. But I guess you know best how the rest of the world should work, eh? must be a heck of a burden, being the smartest sumbitch on earth.

rooga 11 years, 7 months ago

Im smart enough to know that you are an IDIOT!! Im just saying that the LPD needs to do something about this situation. If its in the news like this it must be an issue. So why isnt the LPD doing anything about it! They are always in an area that isnt a high priority, this seems to me like a high priority. If you would like to discuss this more with me, you can send me a message and we can meet and discuss it. Or are you just one to talk, talk, talk, and never do anything? Be a man!! Im always willing to help the ignorant people. Thats what this "sumbitch" does. What do you do??

First of all, increased police presence means nothing the community doesn't back them up.... ehem.

Second, the comment about "traffic stops" is rediculous. Traffic stops are one of the best tools for interdiction of criminal activity especially given the mobile nature of our society. Crime goes mobile at one point or another.

Maybe better lighting should be installed in the area. Seems like a good investment considering it will have nothing but a positive impact anyway you look at it. Light increases the chances of being witnessed which decreases the probability of crime.

Try cutting the cops a little slack. They do, afterall, risk getting killed to keep the community from running wild. Besides, only a stupid criminal is going to pull stunts while police cars are in the area. They'll just wait for the officers to leave.

It gets old hearing people point out all the problems in the world without any realistic suggestions about how to improve things.

I've grew up in lawrence and have known that in the darkness there are shadows that we can't see and it has always been known that you don't walk at nite alone or with friends, we have a beautiful community but not all of the people are beautiful. Like anywhere else, the police can't help you if you don't help yourself, don't go looking for trouble in the dark. If staying behind locked doors is the way, car or in the home, protect yourself and be street wise, take care of number one first. A little commonsense is needed in every adult.

Emily Hadley 11 years, 7 months ago

Am I the only one who thinks that walking alone at midnight is perfectly normal? The library closes at midnight! Many students walk to and from campus regardless of how late they study. The 1200 block of Louisiana is just extra vulnerable because along the west side of almost the whole block, there are water tanks and the accompanying camoflauging trees & bushes. The rest of the ghetto is so densely populated, it seems unlikely that much could go unnoticed.

Maybe Dave Strano's idea of grassroots neighborhood watches isn't so crazy ... the coming, leaving, and always-moving students don't have the tight-knit neighborhood that the rest of Lawrence might enjoy, so it is harder to keep tabs on unusual stuff.

This is a batch of bad Oread news, that's for sure. That was always a very chill neighborhood when I lived over there. Then again, where I live now was infested with crack houses then, so I guess it is all just always changing.

Well, everything in the ghetto is slowly being sectioned off with iron fences, so that should eventually cut down on the sketchy foot traffic between houses, if the lighting doesn't get updated first.

I do feel sorry for this young lady, but come on now girls. DON'T WALK ALONE AT NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!

Vince you had me just rolling...........I do feel sorry for here still.

Common sense to all young minded college girls who walk alone at night.

  1. DONT DO IT.

OldEnuf2BYurDad 11 years, 7 months ago

"Do the streets automatically belong to thugs when the sun goes down? "

For as long as I've been alive, yes. That's what's stupid about this: whether or not someone SHOULD be able to walk the streets alone at night isn't the issue. The issue is: Does common sense tell you that it's a GOOD idea or a BAD idea?

Being groped like that was wrong and probably traumatic for the victim, but boy, that girl got LUCKY. I've read more stories of rape in this town than I have stories of "groping".
