Pit bull bites officer

News from today's police briefing:¢ Officer bitten:A pit bull attacked a Lawrence Police Officer Friday night in the 300 block of Mississippi Street, according to a report. The officer, Warner Stumpenhaus, was called to the area about 8 p.m. because two pit bulls were running loose. He found the dogs, made contact with their 44-year-old owner, and they started to take the dogs around the back of the man's home at 325 Miss. As they were walking around the home, a third dog appeared and lunged at Stumpenhaus. He raised his arm to defend himself and the dog bit him on the forearm, according to a report. When he was able to shake the dog off, the owner chased it down and put it inside the home. The owner was cited for charges including having an animal at large and no proof of vaccinations. The dog was quarantined. Stumpenhaus went to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for treatment.¢ More panhandling problems: Police arrested 30-year-old Joseph H. Richards of Lawrence late Sunday night on suspicion of threatening a person who gave him money near 10th and Mass. Streets downtown. The 31-year-old man told police he had given Richards $2, and that later in the night he saw him involved in an argument. He asked Richards if he had used the money to buy food. Officers arrested Richards on suspicion of assault, disorderly conduct and making a criminal threat. When that didn't work, they tried to break its neck and cut it, according to a report. The rabbit was taken to the veterinarian but didn't survive. The roommate's explanation, according to a police report, was that he didn't think he could care for the rabbit anymore, so he was going to eat it.The woman reported the incident to police on Friday as a case of animal cruelty. Police have spoken with the suspect over the phone, but as of this morning, no citations had been issued. Shouldn't Lawrence qualify for its own episode of COPS sometime soon?

Christine Pennewell Davis 11 years, 10 months ago

Ken Miller 11 years, 10 months ago

"sleeping naked about 6 a.m. between the building and air conditioner at Trinity Episcopal Church"

Well, it WAS pretty hot out.

Jd Finch 11 years, 10 months ago

Wow, talk about frightening incompetence: these boobs couldn't kill a rabbit.

I wonder which one of the braniacs thought to use a plastic bag... So much for instinctual hunting ability.

Gabe Hoffman 11 years, 10 months ago

Actually Jayhawk, Zip Lock's first use was as a suffocating device created in the 50's by the CIA. Later the technology was sold and used for consumer practices.

Little known fact.

Kelly Powell 11 years, 10 months ago

How do you botch butchering a rabbit? Pick him up by the back legs and whack him on the base of the neck....voila! one brocken neck bunny.....A big lop ear like that is better for baking .

adky 11 years, 10 months ago

Did the guy attach conditions when he gave the bum $2? If not, he got what he deserved. What right does he have to make sure his gift was spent the way he wanted it?

Confrontation 11 years, 10 months ago

Darn! No pic! I'd love to see what this jerk looks like so I could avoid him at all costs.

Confrontation 11 years, 10 months ago

I had some idiots throw a water balloon at my car several years ago. It hit the windshield and splattered half water and half ice all over. I can definitely see how it can cause an accident or hurt someone if the window is shattered. These guys need to grow up and stop acting like kids!

Dani Davey 11 years, 10 months ago

wait, wait, wait, officers arrested three men for throwing water balloons into the street at 4:30 a.m. but haven't even cited the guys who tried to break a bunny's neck?

devilsrighthandman 11 years, 10 months ago

Don't know if you recall but a year ago some college kids were throwing water ballons into traffic and caused a pretty big accident. Back then everyone was calling for their heads and the LPD's too. This town cannot seem to make up their mind and are pretty contradictive most times!!

meburr 11 years, 10 months ago

nschmi04 - they were going to a one car rollover. The lady fliped her car on to it's roof by wakarusa school-luckily was not hurt. I drove by after it happened, you would have though it was a fatality by the looks - seat belts, seat belts, seat belts.

Confrontation 11 years, 10 months ago

How do you TRY to cut a rabbit and not succeed? I think another cruelty issue is that people keep rabbits as pets. Let them go back into the wild. Not everything has to be a pet. I definitely disagree with this form of cruelty to animals.

geekin_topekan 11 years, 10 months ago

Nekked pandhandler threatening to kill a bunny with a vicious pit on the corner of 10th and Mass. That would be news. The rest of this blotter is getting to be old hat. Whats this town coming to?

Christine Pennewell Davis 11 years, 10 months ago

water ballons?? they have to be joking come on now that is a waste of police power besides as hot as it has been who would complain with a little cool off or at that time sober up call:) Hang the bunny killers bad bad boy you killed thumper you must pay.

geekin_topekan 11 years, 10 months ago

LJWorld is going to play this out till it gets boring.Kinda like th Taylor Lofts crusade earlier this year.Nobody gives a hoot about Taylor residents. Nekked, panhandlers threatening to kill a bunny on the corner of 10th and Mass. Now that would be news!

I really like it when the paper gives us names. Who beats his women? Apparently 35-year-old Christopher Belone does. Now all his buddies know it, and the women of Lawrence can right him off their "list of potential mates".

BJ 11 years, 10 months ago

Oh my oh my, TWO reports today involving the wet shelter; a naked drunk and a violent drunk.

But BJ, the shelter is doing such a great thing in this community!

Oh I'm so sorry. Without them we wouldn't have such lovely transients that we cherish so much and that make downtown smell so lovely and make it so peacefull for everyone.

What the hell is going on here for crying out loud. Oops, that's right, it's Lawrence, I really should chill and feel for those drunks.

With love, BJ

OldEnuf2BYurDad 11 years, 10 months ago

If we have a weekly reported crime involving people pandhandling, will we then be able to come to a consensus that there is a "beggar" problem downtown that needs to be dealt with? Advocates of warehousing drunks: how much crime will it take to satisfy you that "feed them" isn't working?

Someday, an ordinary guy will hand one of these dudes a dollar, and the guy will stab him to death for it. THEN everyone will be on the badwagon, and acting like it was their idea to clean up the streets all along.

a2thek 11 years, 10 months ago

This rabbit should be taken out to the fair and out of the hands of somebody that doesnt want it. At least it would get a chance to have a ribbon or something. I think these people are on drugs or something. EAT A RABBIT...GET REAL. Do the police buy into that story and believe that crap or what because last time I checked I dont think pets are supposed to be disposed by eating them. GOOD Lord. I dont know whether to laugh or cry. Whose at more fault here the cops for not giving a ticket or the two that wanted to eat their rabbit. LAME

Oh if only this were true Dad. Sadly this will probably draw females to him like flies to rotton fruit.

scarey to have a roommate like that! saw the girl on 6news at 10pm. seems story was more about animal cruelty. people who start with this kind of animal cruelty usually go on to cruelty against humans. hope he and the friend get the felony animal cruelty charge.
God bless the girl...she was obviously very upset in the tv interview.

Danielle Brunin 11 years, 10 months ago

Somebody at Paul Davis Restoration was embezzling money? No way! That company is a mess. After the fire in our apartment building last year, we had them do our restoration work. So did our neighbors. They lost a lot of our stuff and the stuff of our neighbors who used their services, including the urn of our downstairs neighbor's mother. Then, they fired the only guy who actually knew what was going on. All I can say is, DO NOT USE PAUL DAVIS RESTORATION!!!

badger 11 years, 10 months ago

I think bunnies are tasty.

That said, if you really want to eat a bunny, you can buy one from the nice lady at the farmers market, and it comes all chopped up into parts with no head, and so it fits in the pot a lot better and you don't have to put it in a plastic bag or get embarrassed by being on the LJWorld police blotter for being unable not only to hunt for your food, but to kill it when it's already helpfully tame and domesticated. I'm pretty sure, if I had no other options and it was either eat the pets or risk the zombies outside, I could successfully kill, skin, clean, and cook any pet I've ever had, including the hamsters (though I'd have to have them all at once, and bake them in a pie or something).

These are the people who will be weeded out of our society when Snake Plissken sets off the EMP device, is all I'm sayin'.

the guys rabbit was sick, and he was putting it out of it's misery. Thats completely legal. Leave the poor guy alone. He was trying to do the rabbit a favor. Its not his fault if he's too stupid to kill a rabbit. Put your foot on its head and apply pressure simple as that.

brotherskeeper 11 years, 9 months ago

I am little late on this one too, but Paul Davis Restoration is a complete pain in the ass to deal with. Just higher the damn subcontractors yourself and save the headache. Well it will be about the same but you can keep the same headache at a 10% savings.

Find good local guys that are worth a crap.
