Bond increased for suspect in domestic-violence killing

Judge Jack Murphy increased the bond from $60,000 to $300,000 this afternoon for a Lawrence man charged with fatally beating his girlfriend last week at Gaslight Village mobile-home park, 1900 W. 31st St.Christopher Belone, 35, is charged with intentional second-degree murder in the death of 37-year-old Linda Begay, who was pronounced dead Tuesday at Stormont-Vail in Topeka after being beaten Saturday afternoon. Belone’s defense attorney, Greg Robinson, has requested a second autopsy on Begay, which will be conducted later this week.Other crime-related news from today’s police briefing:¢ Police arrested 24-year-old Jonathan William Payne of Kansas City, Kan. for criminal trespassing, disorderly conduct, and carrying a knife near a bar around 11:30 p.m. Saturday after he refused to leave Last Call, 729 N.H., according to a report. ¢ Gunshots reported: Lawrence Police took two reports of gunshots being fired early Sunday morning- one about 1:15 a.m. in the 2500 block of Redbud Lane, and another two hours later at Conoco, 1030 N. 3rd St. – but witnesses weren’t able to identify a suspect in either case. ¢ A 26-year-old man went to the hospital with possible broken bones after being punched in a fight early Saturday morning in the 1500 block of Legends Trail.Thefts:¢ 300 block of Glenview Drive: A 58-year-old woman told police someone entered her home while she was sleeping between non and 1:30 p.m. Friday and stole $300 cash.¢ 3400 Iowa St.: 20 chrome lug nuts, two chrome wheels, and two tires were stolen from Crown Chevrolet between 7:45 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30 a.m. Thursday. ¢ 3300 Iowa St.: A 57-year-old Wellsville man’s 2005 Ford Mustang, valued at $20,000, was stolen between 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday-contributed by Eric Weslander.
