Soothing music for a cold winter’s night

This weekend I told mother nature to stuff it and headed down for a good old local show at The Bottleneck. Three bands came together to celebrate a new split album from It’s True and Cowboy Indian Bear.

The first band to take the stage was Capybara. I’m going to assume this is a fairly new band. Their tunes were pretty catchy, and they had two drummers (scoring some brownie points with me). I’d like to see them again when they have more shows behind them.

Up next was a band from Omaha, It’s True. Boy, talk about some gorgeous music. And technically, these guys were right on. They never missed a beat, and hit every sound with complete confidence. The singer had just a gorgeous voice, and made me a little sad that they’re not from around here, meaning their Lawrence appearances will probably be a bit rare.

The Bottleneck was getting more packed with each band. Seems I wasn’t the only one fed up with mother nature and the snow. For the most part, everyone was in a crazy good mood. Almost giddy, in fact. So by the time local favorites Cowboy Indian Bear took the stage, the crowd was downright silly. I even caught the waitress doing a little boogie during one of their songs.

I’ve always enjoyed their sets when Katlyn Conroy takes the stage with them. I don’t normally go for the singer/songwriter type, but she’s got such a gorgeous voice that compliments the songs so nicely. Sometimes I secretly wished she’d join them for more songs.

I’ve ranted and raved about Cowboy Indian Bear before. I was happy to finally hear some new songs, and by golly when I dig enough money out of the couch I’ll be marching down to the record store and picking up the new split album. But until then, this $5 show did a great job of keeping me satisfied.

Note: Special thanks to my coworker Bethany Smith for taking such great photos of the poorly lit stage.
