Just what I needed

Did you watch the Grammys last night? Me neither! Ha!

I was at the #HelpHaiti@Lawrence benefit show at Liberty Hall, and apparently, so were many of you.

Some good folks over in Lawrence put the show together. It featured local music, local food (buffet style!), a silent auction and speakers. The money raised all went to Partners in Health.

We got there early, which was good because it was easier to get in on the delicious grub they had from Genovese, La Parilla, Zen Zero and Global Cafe.

Up first was the lovely Rachel Anderson:

I feel like I cover a lot of bands, but never enough singer/songwriter types. Rachel’s soothing voice was a good way to start the event, while people were still mingling and lining up for food.

Then we were treated to some good old Lawrence rock with The Dactyls. By this point the place was packed. Just packed. I saw everyone from my friends to my neighbors, even old classmates. Word about the show quickly spread on Twitter throughout the day, so it was no surprise when the “Twiterrati of Lawrence” showed up. And babies! There were babies everywhere! Everyone brought their kids, which certainly perked up the atmosphere.

We all boogied to The Dactyls:

All charity talk aside, this was just a wonderful event. With just a little more than six weeks left in my pregnancy, I’m not going to lie, I’ve been feeling crabby. I think the biggest mood killer has been the fact that I haven’t been able to see as many shows. In the Summer of 2009, I saw at least one show a week, and mingled with my friends/neighbors/community members constantly. This winter we’ve all been snowed in, grumpy and not taking in enough music. So when an event like this comes along, I don’t mean to miss the message (of helping victims of the Haiti earthquake), but I was more than thrilled to reminisce in that good old Summer feeling again. Good music, good food, good people. There’s really nothing more I could ask for. Good job, Lawrence.
