Funeral held for KU student killed in Wisconsin canoe accident; search for fourth victim ongoing

Mori Weinstein

A funeral for Mori Weinstein, the 21-year-old Kansas University junior who died in a Wisconsin canoe accident, took place Wednesday.

Weinstein’s funeral was the first of the four young men killed when their canoe apparently capsized early Sunday morning on an icy lake in East Troy, Wis. Weinstein’s body was recovered on Monday. The accident also killed former KU student Lanny Patrick Sack, 20, Christopher J. McQuillen, 21, and another young man.

All four friends attended the same Chicago area high school. The Chicago Tribune covered Weinstein’s funeral, reporting that hundreds gathered at Shalom Memorial Park in Arlington Heights, Ill.

Rescuers on Wednesday were still searching the lake for the body of the fourth friend.

With ice conditions on the lake “poor” according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, crews were walking the shores to search for the man, The Associated Press reported Wednesday. The department said divers walking on the ice near the shore were breaking through.

Authorities have not yet publicly named that victim, but I’ve seen no indication in media reports or from the people I interviewed for my initial story on Tuesday that he had ties to KU.

Members of the East Troy fire department prepare to head out on a boat to search for missing canoeists, Monday, Jan. 4, 2016, in East Troy, Wisconsin.

KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little, in a statement, offered condolences from the university.

“We are heartbroken by the recent tragedy that took the lives of four young people, including KU student Mori Weinstein and former KU student Lanny Patrick Sack,” she said. “On behalf of the entire KU community, I offer the deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives.”
