KU’s financial strategist retires after 20 years

Lindy Eakin, Kansas University’s vice provost for administration and finance, will become a full-time teacher after spending about two decades as an administrator, KU announced today.Eakin graduated from KU in 1974 with a degree in business and started working as a budget officer in 1979. He was named budget director in 1989 and then associate executive vice chancellor for administration and finance in 1991. A staff re-organization in 1996 landed him in his current role.KU spokeswoman Lynn Bretz said no finite time has been set for when Eakin will leave his position, but it’s expected to be sooner, rather than later.”He’s going to be teaching in the classroom in the fall,” she said. “He’d like to be out of his office by June 1, but there’s no firm date.”With the university’s budget year ending in about a month and next year’s budget nearly complete, it seemed like the appropriate time to make a transition, Bretz said.In a statement, KU Provost Richard Lariviere lauded Eakin’s service.”It is gratifying that our students will now benefit from the same dedication, insightful analysis and thoroughness that Lindy applied to the budget and its many complexities,” Lariviere said.A search for Eakin’s successor will be held. He will be replaced on an interim basis by university comptroller Diane Goddard. Goddard has been at KU since 1984.
