Courting Hispanic Students
Kansas University officials are pushing to increase the number of Hispanic students who attend the university.According to a press release from KU, the Latino Vision Council was formed earlier this spring after Provost Richard Lariviere encouraged school leadership to look at minority enrollment. The goal is to “identify strategies and actions that will guide the university in assisting this important segment of the state’s population.”In other words, the purpose of the council is to entice Hispanic students to eastern Kansas. Some ideas recently tossed around by the council: Providing more KU promotional materials in Spanish Establishing a Spanish-language hot line for admissions * Providing more university-based summer camps for Latino children and teens, such as the recent Harvest of Hope Leadership Academy migrant education program.According to U.S. Census Bureau figures, Hispanics are the largest minority group in Kansas.Fore more information on the Latino Vision Council, click here.
