Freshmen walk up the hill to open college careers

More than 80 freshmen showed up on campus at 8:30 this morning to take part in the 11th annual Mount Oread Scholars walk up the hill.Organizers hope that taking part in the walk will serve as a symbolic start to an education at Kansas University, which ends with the walk down the hill in May. Students were a bit less philosophical when asked why they got up so early and were trudging around on such a hot day.”Food. Free food,” said Kristi Jensen, Hoisington freshman.”That’s what Hawk Week is all about,” said Emily Bergman, a freshman from St. Benedict. There are 189 students in the Oread scholar program.
