Here are some odds and ends from the Kansas AFL-CIO meeting Friday: Gov. Mark Parkinson, a Democrat, told the crowd that Democrats face a tough election. “I know people are saying this is a lost cause. We still have a good shot.” Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Holland got his biggest applause when he said that if elected, “I will not allow the state Chamber (of Commerce) to weaken the worker’s compensation law.” Holland, a state senator, faces Republican Sam Brownback, now a U.S. senator.

Alaska’s GOP Senate leader has Kansas roots; Roberts on climate change; Brownback gets endorsement
Joe Miller, the tea party and Sarah Palin favorite who leads incumbent U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski in the Alaska Republican primary, is from Kansas. His website states: “He grew up in a working class family in Kansas.”
U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., quoted in the Topeka Capital-Journal this morning on the issue of climate change. “There’s no question there’s some global warming, but I’m not sure what it means. A lot of this is condescending elitism.”
The Kansas Agri-Business Retailers Association has endorsed Republican Sam Brownback for governor. Brownback, a U.S. senator, faces Democrat Tom Holland, a state senator from Baldwin City. The Association’s 700 members include agronomy services, chemical, fertilizer, seed sales and manufacturing companies.

Brownback backed by troopers; Reform Party candidate faces charges; Huelskamp gets dueling endorsements
The Kansas State Troopers Association announced Friday its endorsement of Republican Sam Brownback for governor. Brownback faces Democrat Tom Holland in the election. "In our conversations with Senator Brownback it is clear that he understands the needs of the troopers out patrolling the highways of Kansas," said Eric Haskin, chairman of the troopers' political action committee.
Ken Cannon, who is the Reform Party candidate for governor, has been charged with falsely reporting a domestic disturbance stemming from an incident in Cloud County. In another incident, he has been charged with battery and making a criminal threat related to an alleged altercation in April in downtown Salina.
