Volleyball season is heating up

Last week was tryouts, this week is practices, and next week are the games.

That’s the schedule for many high schools teams including Free State High’s volleyball team, which opens the season on the road in the Lansing triangular on Sept. 4.

Yet, unlike most other Lawrence high school teams, the Firebirds will have to get used to the road because they don’t have a home match until Sept. 25. However, I believe they were the first team to practice (and eventually will be the first team to play games) in the newly renovated main gym, which is still without bleachers.

A few Lawrence natives are finishing up their minor league baseball seasons:

Cody Kukuk (Free State, left-handed pitcher): 7-6, 4.18 ERA, 99 IP, 83 H, 52 R, 46 ER, 78 BB, 113 K (played at both A-ball and A-advanced in the Red Sox’s organization this year).

Albert Minnis (Lawrence High, left-handed pitcher): 2-3, 4.27 ERA, 46.1 IP, 60 H, 27 R, 22 ER, 15 BB, 41 K (played mainly at A-ball in the Astros’ organization, with three appearances in the rookie league).

Robby Price (Free State, left fielder): .216 batting average, 68 games, 25 R, 46 H, 3 HR, 18 RBI, 27 BB, 26 K, 1 SB (played all of his games at Triple-A in the Rays’ organization).
