Dorian Green vs. Taylor Bird: Leading Lions ready to rumble

In one corner we have 5-foot-8 senior Taylor Bird and her 18 points per game scoring average, which ranks second in the Sunflower League.

In the other corner, we’ve got 6-foot-1 senior Dorian Green and his 24 points per game average.

A funny kind of logic, then, says that if the two leading scorers for the Lawrence High girls and boys basketball teams played a game of one-on-one, Green would beat Bird by six.

At least one of the two agrees with that assessment.

Let’s play ball.

Last week, after both Bird and Green led the Lions to back-to-back victories over Leavenworth, each was asked what the outcome of a one-on-one game to 11 might be.

Would Bird be able to use the same kind of quickness and power she displays in leading the Lions against Green? Would Green’s high-rising, smooth jumper be too much for Bird to stop?

“He’s skinny so I think I could push him around,” Bird said with a huge smile. “But he elevates so high, I don’t think I’d be able to block that shot.”

That said, Bird — with supreme confidence — said she might be able to hang in there against Green. Her prediction for the game: 11 to 5 in favor of Green.

Green agreed with the winner but differed on the outcome.

“I’ll give her 11 to 2,” he said. “I might let her score a couple just so she feels good about herself.”

That won’t be necessary. Bird’s accomplishments of the past more than take care of that.

“He always jokes with us and says the girls belong in the small gym,” Bird said. “But we always just say, ‘Whose name is on the banner on the wall?'”

That has to be worth a few points right there.

Regardless of the predicted outcome of the one-on-one match-up, both players are gearing up their teams for another run to the state tournament. Last year, Bird helped lead the LHS girls to the Class 6A state title, while Green led the Lions on a wild ride all the way to the state championship game.

The odds of a repeat performance are slim, but both players are as confident in their teams as they are in their own abilities.

The season wraps up this week, as both LHS squads travel to Shawnee Mission North tonight before closing the regular season at home against Free State on Friday.

After that, it’s do-or-die time, and both Bird and Green appear to be ready.
