Is Chucky Hunter the best Free State football player of all-time?

It’s been three seasons now and, to other Class 6A teams around the state, Free State High senior Chucky Hunter has become the guy that people ask the following question about: “Hasn’t he graduated yet?”Unfortunately for his opponents, Hunter has not. It just seems like he should have by now since he’s played a big-time role in the Free State offense for three seasons. As a sophomore, Hunter led Free State in receptions, with 44, and recorded 504 yards while playing in the shadows of Ryan and Brian Murphy, as well as fellow-wide receiver Craig Rosenstengle. Free State went 11-1 that year, losing in the semifinals of the state playoffs. The following year, while taking over at tailback, Hunter rushed for 1,090 yards with 16 TDs on 168 carries. He added 13 catches for 126 yards and also was a dynamic kick returner.Saving his best for last, the senior currently has 1,298 yards rushing on the year in less than nine games. Hunter sat out the Leavenworth game and played sparingly in the second half of a blowout against Olathe Northwest. In all, Hunter has tallied more than 3,100 yards from scrimmage in three seasons. And that’s to say nothing of the kick return yards that make up his total yardage figure. In addition, he’s spent the past two seasons being the focal point for opposing defenses. More often than not, defenses that have lined up to play the Firebirds have started with one philosophy — stop Chucky Hunter. They’ve rarely been successful and that got me thinking…. Is Hunter the best football player to come through Free State High? There are a handful of good arguments for other guys here. But I’m not sure any of them had the three-year success of Hunter. So what are your thoughts? Where does Hunter rank on the list of all-time Free State High greats? What about his place in the city? How does Hunter stack up against the legendary Lawrence High running backs of the past? This is just the tip of the iceberg for our week’s worth of coverage leading up to Friday’s quarterfinal playoff game between Free State and Olathe North.
