A large delivery truck was reported stolen Wednesday afternoon in Lawrence, and it was apparently chased by police to the outskirts of Topeka.

The truck was reported stolen just after 12:30 p.m. while it was being used to deliver mattresses in the 800 block of Michigan Street, Officer Drew Fennelly of the Lawrence Police Department said in an email. Fennelly said right as police put out an “attempt to locate” message to law enforcement, dispatch received a call about a reckless driver with a description matching that of the stolen mattress truck.

Fennelly said the Kansas Highway Patrol located the truck west of town on U.S. Highway 40, and Lawrence police assisted that agency in a pursuit. Fennelly said he didn’t immediately have details on how the pursuit ended, or what speeds the chase reached.

It appears, however, that the truck made it to Topeka — almost.

After authorities deployed stop-sticks that shredded at least one of the truck’s tires, it crashed and came to a stop on the north shoulder of U.S. 40 near Southeast Tecumseh Road, the Topeka Capital-Journal reported. According to the Capital-Journal, the truck remained upright and the suspect driving it was taken by ambulance to a Topeka hospital with injuries that were not considered serious.
