Three captured after early-morning police pursuit

There was a commotion this morning at the edge of town, just east of the East Hills Business Park.

A reader who contacted us wondering what was going on described the location — approximately the 1400 block of East 1750 Road — as a “cornfield.” I did not verify the type of crop with law enforcement. What I did find out from Lawrence police officer Drew Fennelly was this:

Around 9 a.m., a number of law enforcement vehicles were in the area searching for a person suspected of fleeing police earlier in the morning. Shortly before 5 a.m., an officer on patrol saw a vehicle possibly related to auto burglaries occurring in town. The officer attempted to initiate a car stop in the 1800 block of West 21st Street, but the driver fled. After a lengthy pursuit, police took two suspects into custody.

Later, about 10 a.m., Fennelly said the third suspect had been captured and that officers were preparing to leave the area near the East Hills Business Park.
