‘Extreme fire danger’ warning issued for Douglas County due to high temps, wind and low humidity

If you were considering grilling, setting off fireworks or even using a magnifying glass to light things (hopefully not ants) on fire, Douglas County’s Emergency Management team is asking you to think again.

Between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday the county is under a red-flag warning, the emergency management team said in a news release.

This means that a combination of low humidity, high temperatures and windy conditions make it the perfect opportunity for fires to spread, the release said. It’s a situation of “extreme fire danger.”

The red-flag warning was issued by the National Weather Service in Topeka, whose online data shows that Thursday’s high temperature may reach 73 degrees and wind gusts could peak at 25 mph.

In addition, the area’s humidity will likely sink to between 21 and 26 percent, the NWS says.

“Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly,” the NWS says. “Outdoor burning is not recommended.”

With the high winds and high temps, Thursday might be a perfect day to try flying a kite or perhaps just go for a stroll. Just try to avoid lighting things on fire, either on purpose or accidentally.
