New firefighter nonprofit to host pancake breakfast on Saturday

Tim Reazin is a busy man. When he’s not out working as a Lawrence firefighter, serving as Eudora’s mayor or coaching football, he still finds the time to help the community.

Saturday morning you’ll be able to find Reazin behind a griddle at Freddy’s Frozen Custard, 2030 W. 23rd St., where he’ll be flipping pancakes for the Lawrence Professional Firefighter’s Charitable Foundation.

The foundation, which recently received status as a nonprofit, is an organization stemming from the local firefighter’s union, Reazin said.

The pancake breakfast, called the Hotcake Chow Down, is meant to jump start the nonprofit with a bit of seed money and give a boost to the group’s favorite charities, Reazin said.

Among those charities are the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Relay for Life and the Burn Foundation, Reazin said.

“It’s five dollars for all you care to eat pancakes,” Reazin said. “And we’ll have booths out for any other donations people care to give.”

Because of the firefighter’s busy schedules – they work in 24 hour shifts – the number of folks working the event is not exactly clear, Reazin said.

But rest assured, he’ll have help.

In all, the nonprofit hopes to fill at least 200 plates for the event, Reazin said.

“Any more than that would be incredible,” he said.

I’m not sure how many pancakes that translates to. Probably a lot, depending on the appetites.

The group’s most recent event, a Boot Drive for the MDA, raised $12,000 over the course of one weekend, Reazin said.

And it’s that type of progress which keeps these busy men and women working on projects like the Hotcake Chow Down.

“I see a lot of good that comes out of these types of events and having a charitable organization that works towards serving those in our county and in the area,” Reazin said.

As the nonprofit continues to grow, Reazin said they’ll likely contribute to Lawrence’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

“We’ve got plans in the works to do a pub crawl around or on Saint Patrick’s Day,” he said. “And we’ve had talks about doing a charitable ball as well.”

The Hotcake Chow Down will be held Saturday from 7 to 10 a.m., at Freddy’s Frozen Custard, at the corner of 23rd and Iowa streets.
