Never bring a knife to a holiday-weekend gunfight

They say never to start a story with a cliché, but when you’re writing about someone bringing a knife to a gunfight it’s kind of hard to follow that rule.

One Lawrence man was arrested late Friday night after pulling a knife during an argument, said Lawrence Police Sgt. Laurie Powell.

Just before midnight on Friday police responded to an apartment in the 2600 block of West 26th Street for a report of a disturbance with weapons, Powell said.

In all, seven police officers responded to the scene, according to police activity logs.

At the apartment officers found three people, two of whom got into a fight earlier in the evening, Powell said.

“One subject was in town visiting his friend when they got into a physical altercation with each other,” she said.

Powell did not say how the fight began.

Somewhere during the scuffle things became more serious.

One of the two suspects threatened the other with a knife, Powell said. Feeling threatened, the second suspect then pulled a handgun and fired it into the ground as a deterrent.

Both suspects suffered minor injuries from the fight, Powell said.

Responding officers placed the man who allegedly pulled a knife under arrest, Powell said.

The Lawrence Police Department’s incident number for the disturbance matches the number listed in the Douglas County Jail booking logs for the arrest of Jason Allen Kuhn, 37, of Lawrence.

Kuhn was arrested at the scene on suspicion of aggravated assault, battery and violation of his probation, the logs state. He was released from the Douglas County Jail Sunday afternoon after posting a $10,000 bond.
