Douglas County sheriff’s deputies had to spend a little time in a ditch Tuesday afternoon after they said an intoxicated man drove his car off the road near 31st Street and Haskell Avenue.

The man, Jerry Ratcliff, 23, of Lawrence, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence at the scene around 4:30 p.m. He was released from the Douglas County Jail later on Tuesday after posting a $250 bond.

The car came to a rest several yards off the roadway, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Kristen Dymacek said. The car did not roll.

While Ratcliff was not injured in the accident, the vehicle was damaged, Dymacek said.

It was not immediately clear whether Ratcliff was wearing his seat belt during the accident, Dymacek said.

Further information was not available Wednesday afternoon.
