Sharp decrease in the number of restaurants with health code violations

So far in April, restaurant inspections have taken a turn for the better.

Since I’ve been writing up inspection results, the number of establishments that make the list every two weeks generally hovers around 10. But for the first two weeks in April that number has gone down significantly.

Maybe restaurants have been doing a little spring cleaning and that’s why so few made the list this time. Hopefully it stays this way for the rest of the month (or for the rest of eternity). Fingers crossed.

Two times each month I take a look at inspection results and list every place either listed out of compliance or with 10 or more code violations. Full reports are available online at agriculture.ks.gov.

There you can find details about specific violations, which can vary greatly. Noncritical citations include unlabeled products, improperly stored cleaning materials, minor plumbing issues and more. Critical violations include cross-contamination of raw and cooked foods, insect and rodent issues, unclean food preparation areas and more.

Some violations may be corrected during the inspection, while others take longer to fix and require follow-up inspections.

All businesses, even those listed out of compliance, met the basic requirements to safely remain open, unless otherwise noted.

With this regular report I try to provide basic information about food inspections in Douglas County. But due to the sheer volume of inspections, it’s difficult to offer detailed information about each establishment.

For the first half of April, three establishments are either listed out of compliance or have 10 or more code violations.

Keep in mind, once violations are found, the department works with the staff and ownership to resolve the situation. Inspectors also conduct follow-up visits to ensure the violations are no longer an issue.

Here are Douglas County’s restaurant inspection results for the first half of April:

• Aladdin Cafe, 1021 Massachusetts St., last had a regular inspection on April 14, and 11 violations were found. The restaurant is currently listed as in compliance.

• Quinton’s Bar & Deli, 615 Massachusetts St., last had a regular inspection on April 13, and 14 violations were found. The restaurant is currently listed as in compliance.

• Sandbar, 17 E. Eighth St., last had a regular inspection on April 12, and 13 violations were found. The restaurant is currently listed as out of compliance.
