Updated: OU’s Gresham out for season, ChatterTV reaction after 9-3 start

Tuesday night update

So it’s official: Per AP, Oklahoma tight end Jermaine Gresham will miss the remaining college football season with an injured right knee.

Doctors determined that Gresham needed stitches to repair cartilage damage in the knee. The recovery time is five months.

This leaves Ryan Broyles as the most likely go-to option in the Sooners’ passing game. Gresham was a vital component to the offense and his absence is significant. It goes without saying OU will miss its star tight end.

Gresham is in his senior season and his stock in the NFL Draft may have taken a hit with this latest setback. He was a projected first rounder in April.

Tuesday afternoon update

The bad news keeps rolling in for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Coach Bob Stoops said at his weekly Tuesday press conference that tight end Jermaine Gresham will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his injured right knee. Gresham may not return for the rest of the season. If doctors determine after the scope that he needs surgery, the recovery period would be five months. If not, he would still miss a few weeks.

Ouch.

With Sam Bradford out, the Sooners’ two best playmakers on offense will be forced to sit on the sidelines for awhile. Gresham caught 66 passes for 950 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. He was also projected as a first-round NFL Draft pick in 2009.

Bradford figures to be the first one to return. Stoops said on Monday that he should be out 2-4 weeks.

Could have been better, could have been worse.

In the debut episode of ConferenceChatter TV, I was wrong on three of my picks in the Big 12: I picked Oklahoma over BYU (who the heck saw that coming?), Colorado to beat Colorado St. (trouble in Boulder) and Wake Forest over Baylor (close game).

Here’s my thoughts regarding how things played out in week 1 of the Big 12 football season:

Now, for the second installment of the 2009 Sorrentino Scale, football edition. The number in parenthesis is what the team was ranked last week:

  • 1 (1). Texas (1-0): My favorite in the South until they lose.
  • 2 (3). Oklahoma State (1-0): Huge statement game against Georgia. Non-conference schedule continues to be respectable next week vs. Houston.
  • 3 (2). Oklahoma (0-1): They’re down, but not out. Should get on track next two weeks at home.
  • 4 (4). Kansas (1-0): Welcome back, Chris Harris. How nice do the safeties look right now with Darrell Stuckey, Justin Thornton and Harris?
  • 5 (6). Nebraska (1-0): Roy Helu Jr. averaged 9.5 yards per carry in week 1. Clearly the focus of the Husker offense.

  • 6 (5). Texas Tech (1-0): Didn’t do anything wrong in week 1; just not as flashy as some of the others ahead of them.
  • 7 (8). Missouri (1-0): More balance on offense than people realize; Blaine Gabbert looks great, and Derrick Washington and De’Vion Moore form a solid 1-2 RB combo.
  • 8 (7). Baylor (1-0): I hate to move Baylor down after an impressive week 1 performance, but Missouri made a bigger statement by a wider margin.
  • 9 (11). Texas A&M (1-0): Cyrus Gray and rookie Christine Michael form one of the more underrated RB duos in the conference.
  • 10 (10). Kansas State (1-0): I want to see a better performance next week vs. Louisiana-Lafayette.
  • 11 (9). Colorado (0-1): Brutal way to start the year. At home.
  • 12 (12). Iowa State (1-0): Cyclones will be put to the test next week vs. Iowa.

As always, discuss.
