A.J. Abrams: Best Big 12 three-point shooter ever?

Last night, Texas senior guard A.J. Abrams tied former Kansas sharpshooter Jeff Boschee’s Big 12 record for career three-pointers made with 338.

Here’s guessing that Abrams breaks the record in UT’s next game, which will take place Saturday against Kansas State at home. Abrams has made at least one three in 17 of the Longhorns’ 19 games this season.

As I watched Abrams drill 3-of-6 trifectas last night in UT’s 78-72 victory at Baylor, I began to wonder what players he recently passed up on that career Big 12 list.

Here’s the list of career three-pointers made, Big 12 history:

  • T1. A.J. Abrams, Texas: 338 (2005-2009)
  • T1. Jeff Boschee, Kansas: 338 (1998-2002)
  • 3. Clarence Gilbert, Missouri: 332 (1998-2002)
  • 4. John Lucas, Baylor/Oklahoma State: 279 (2001-2005)
  • 5. Jake Sullivan, Iowa State: 270 (2001-2004)

Question to all: Who’s the best three-point shooter you’ve ever seen in the conference?

My take: When Abrams breaks the record, he’ll be deserving of the top spot. What’s impressive to me about Abrams’ ability to consistently knock down three-pointers is that he’s no secret to the opposition, particularly this year now that UT doesn’t have D.J. Augustin running the point. Teams know that he’s UT’s most dangerous scoring threat.

Basically, opposing coaches are sticking a defender on Abrams and telling that defender to not leave him under any circumstance. This defender is not to help on penetration to the basket because UT point guards Justin Mason and Dogus Balbay haven’t proven they can score on a consistent basis and beat you themselves. Abrams is much more lethal and an inch of separation could result in a three-pointer. By the end of the night, these defenders should know Abrams so well that if their coach asks what’s currently playing on Abrams’ iPod, they answer without hesitation.

Despite these defensive efforts, Abrams still averages 17 points makes 2.8 threes per game. He’s shooting 38 percent from long range and still has one of the quickest releases I’ve ever seen, along with former Arizona sharpshooter Salim Stoudamire. Texas does a nice job of running him around picks and incorporating him into the offense in a creative fashion.

Brief rundown of where the rest of the guys on the career three-pointers list are at now:

Boschee is the boys basketball coach at The Barstow School in Kansas City, Mo.

Gilbert is playing overseas in Spain, where he’s averaging 14 points a game for Grupo Begar Leon. He’s still hitting threes (2.7 per game).

Lucas was signed by the Oklahoma City Thunder before the NBA season in September, but was released shortly after in November. He’s currently a free agent.

Sullivan is currently an AAU coach for the All-Iowa Attack. He’s coaching Harrison Barnes, the No. 4-ranked Rivals recruit for the class of 2010. Barnes, a five-star prospect, has a long list of possibilities, including Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Iowa State from the Big 12.

I think all these guys were amazing three-point shooters, but Abrams should be remembered as the best.

That’s all for now, friends. As always, discuss.
