April 29-30, 2010: Tornado in Washington County

Meteorologist Greg Postel and I went storm chasing on April 29, 2010, because of the severe weather threat for our area. We ended up intercepting a storm in Washington County, that produced a brief, weak tornado. Here are some pictures from the drive. You can see the wall cloud that eventually produced this tornado in several of the photographs.

Only one tornado was reported in Kansas on April 29, 2010. The storms eventually formed a squall line with hail and winds the main threats. Wind gusts up to 60 mph were reported in Manhattan, Kansas. A few strong to severe storms continued through the early morning on April 30, 2010. Below are a few pictures from the morning of the dark skies.

On April 24, 2010 we saw a shelf cloud move through the area. Shelf clouds are often mistaken for wall clouds. Here is another photograph that was taken in Lawrence on April 24, 2010 of the shelf cloud. This photograph was taken by Joseph King.
