The two city teams were represented well on the All-Sunflower League selections for both boys and girls basketball.

On the boys side, Lawrence High’s Mike Lewis took home Coach of the Year honors after leading the Lions to their first Sunflower League title since the 2014-15 season. Prior to that, LHS hadn’t won the league since the 2001-02 season.

LHS seniors Trey Quartlebaum and Clarence King were both named to the first team. King average 17.4 points per game, while Quartlebaum scored 16.8 points per contest. Zeke Mayo, who was named to the third team, was also listed as the top sophomore in the Sunflower League. Senior Brett Chapple earned honorable mention honors.

For Free State, senior Noah Butler was listed on the first team after averaging 19 points per game. Junior DK Middleton, who averaged 14 points per outing, was listed on the third team. Freshman point guard Moaze Downing was tabbed honorable mention in his first high school season.

On the girls side, Lawrence High senior Chisom Ajekwu was the only city representative on the first team. Ajekwu, a KU signee, was second in the league in scoring with an average of 16.2 points per game to go along with a league-high 11.0 rebounds per contest. LHS seniors Hannah Stewart and Sammy Williams along with sophomore Ozi Ajekwu were named to the honorable mention team.

Free State junior point guard Caely Kesten was named to the second team after averaging 10.8 points per game. Sophomore Shannon Clarke was listed on the third team. Senior Sam Lawrence and junior Haley Hippe each netted honorable-mention honors.
