We're calling about the post office waiting line. It's getting worse. Why can't they hire more clerks? The postmaster said it was a budget problem. We don't buy it.
Indeed, Lawrence Postmaster Bill Reynolds said a budget problem was to blame for long waits in line. The problem is caused by a nationwide decline in mail volume and revenue.
"That affects our service more than anything else," Reynolds said.
The Lawrence post offices are constantly revising their staffing schedules, but lines will still occur, Reynolds said. The busiest times are typically during the noon hour and again from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. when people are getting off work.
To avoid lines, Reynolds suggests visiting the post office between 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.
