With all the budget problems in education, why aren't secondary sports programs ever mentioned? It seems to benefit only a few of the students.

Lawrence schools Supt. Randy Weseman said the district's budget committee has been gathering information about athletics expenditures at the four junior highs and two high schools.

The objective is to evaluate the program for potential cost savings, he said. The committee has yet to take an in-depth look at sports activities, but it will in the next two months.

This search for budget efficiency won't stop with athletics programs, Weseman said.

"All extracurricular activities are being considered," he said.

Approximately $1 million is spent annually on athletics.
