Why are the school buses in town driving on expired tags? They are for December 2001.

Junior Stiles, branch maintenance manager for Laidlaw Transit in Lawrence, said the state of Kansas granted public school districts a six-week grace period to comply with bus license requirements.

The extension is necessary because the state doesn't send out renewal notices until January, Stiles said.

"I just got the paperwork back from the state (Tuesday)," he said.

Stiles said he didn't anticipate any problem meeting the mid-February deadline for retagging school buses.
