Who decides whether a Kansas University employee is "essential" or "nonessential" on snow days?

Lynn Bretz, director of university relations, said the decision is made by supervisors in each working unit. She said "essential" employees typically perform necessary student and staff safety or service functions. Also, some administrators are needed for snow days.

"Heads of departments that do not perform these essential functions have the authority to close their offices," Bretz said.
