On the music side, he taught private guitar and bass lessons in Lawrence from 1985 to 1995, averaging 40 students a week. Additionally, he played in about a dozen working bands during that time span, performed on 19 albums, was a sound engineer and started his own record label (Manic Records) before going full time into music/film journalism in 1995.
