Photo gallery: University of Kansas freshmen move in

Classes start Monday at the University of Kansas, but students started moving back to campus on Thursday. We asked some of the freshmen moving into the residence halls at Daisy Hill for their thoughts on the start of their college experience.

University of Kansas freshman: Benjamin Bassey (center, blue shirt, with his family). Hometown: Homewood-Flossmoor, Ill. Major: Computer Science/Mechanical engineering. What are you most excited for being a new freshman and on your own? Just being around the college environment. What are you most nervous about? Being alone. Being here by myself. What are your parents most nervous about? They want me to do well in school so they're most worried about me not doing well in school. Is there anything still confusing about KU or the town? Everything seems together and easy to understand. It's not too difficult. How often will you call home? I'll call home almost every day of the week. How often will you go home? Only on breaks.

University of Kansas freshman: Chloe Wilder. Hometown: Olathe Major: Biology What are you most excited for being a new freshman and on your own? Honestly, the freedom. And the freedom to learn what I kinda want to learn, the specific classes that I want to take. What are you most nervous about? Also probably the classes. The schoolwork and making sure that I can stay on top of it. Being able to handle the freedom and still prosper with it. What are your parents most nervous about? Just being safe around campus. That's been the big topic. How often will you call home? Oh gosh. Probably every other day, maybe. How often will you go home? Probably a lot. I do have a cat.

University of Kansas freshman: Cody Milburn Hometown: Stewartville, Minn. Major: Architectural Engineering. What are you most excited for being a new freshman and on your own? I'm just pretty excited to just get into it and start my classes. Just start to see college life first hand. What are you most nervous about? I think my parents and I are both nervous about the same thing because it's about six hours from home. If anything goes wrong you've got that six-hour gap. How often will you call home? Probably weekly. Maybe even daily to start off. It's nice to have my parents there but I don't think I necessarily need them here.

University of Kansas freshman: Schandon Mercado. Hometown: Manhattan, Kan. What are you most excited for being a new freshman and on your own? The opportunity I get to get an education that I really want. What are you most nervous about? Just adjusting to college life from high school. Just living on my own. What are your parents most nervous about? Everything. Living on my own and the whole concept of it. Is there anything still confusing about KU or the town? I feel like parking is going to be the most confusing thing for me right now. How often will you call home? Once a week. How often will you go home? Once a month

University of Kansas freshman: Kennah Roberts. Hometown: Marysville Major: Business What are you most excited for being a new freshman and on your own? Meeting new people and learning a whole bunch of new things. What are you most nervous about? Probably my classes. I grew up in a really small town so I'm going into really big classes now. What are your parents most nervous about? Me being on my own. Is there anything still confusing about KU or the town? Campus is pretty confusing but once I get ahold of it I will be better. How often will you go home? More than my sister did. I have three more sisters at home so I'll probably go visit them a lot more, too.

University of Kansas freshman: Ryan Esser. Hometown: St. Louis Major: Political Science/Pre-Law What are you most excited for being a new freshman and on your own? I'm most excited about meeting new people, getting a good sense of camaraderie and just altogether being away from parents. What are you most nervous about? I'd say I'm most nervous about the size of the dorm in comparison to having the space of a house. What are your parents most nervous about? I think they're the most nervous about me getting to class every day without them having to get involved. Is there anything still confusing about KU or the town? I don't really think I've figured out the full scene of the campus. I don't know everything from top to bottom yet. The town, itself, I haven't really got to dive into yet. How often will you call home? Probably once every two weeks. How often will you go home? Just on the breaks.
