Shelby Mangus, right, monitors anesthesia levels for a dog named Ace as Taylor Boles neuters him inside the mobile surgery unit of Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. The unit visited the Lawrence Humane Society Wednesday. The students expected to perform about 30 surgeries that day during the unit’s first tour. Mangus and Boles are both fourth-year veterinarian students.

Van Go artist Luke Fitzgerald, 18, stops to study a colorful wall of 196 glass panels, 20 of which he estimates he created, outside Van Go, 715 New Jersey St., during The Big Picture event on Thursday. The event, which featured live music and a look at the new glass tile mural created by Van Go artists, marked the start of the organization's Big Picture Endowment Campaign, said Development Director Eliza Nichols. The campaign is meant to ensure the longevity of the 20-year-old organization, Nichols said. So far, the endowment has raised $555,000. The group hopes to accumulate $750,000 by the end of the year. The wall has the capacity to hold more than 800 tiles, Nichols said. A single tile can be purchased for $150.
