Lawrence Police facilities tour June 20, 2014

Photographs from a tour of Lawrence Police Department operations, which are spread over six buildings throughout town — a circumstance that department leaders say produces significant inefficiencies. Didn't we build a new jail so the police could take over the space that was previously used to house inmates? What happened to that plan? Ok... let's just forget what we said 10 years ago and spend our way to a new destination since that's not good enough and a re-model won't do. What happens in 5 or 7 years when the police decide that Lawrence is getting just too darn big and spread out to be effectively covered by one central police station and we need to build a couple more in a decentralization plan? Are we just supposed to forget about this current debacle? Are we going to be on the hook for another cool $50,000,000 then? Perhaps if you'd stop buying toys to prevent the nonexistant terrorist threat that Lawrence faces, you'd have enough money to maintain your facilities to a level appropriate for the community you serve.

What toys have they been buying to deal with the "nonexistent terrorist threat"? Quite a bit of the stuff they have received has been through grants and other programs designed to equip PDs with the equipment they need to deal with active shooters and other scenarios..

Surely you'd be the first to complain if you needed help from the police, but they couldn't get to you quick enough, as they first had to go pick up equipment across town and then head to you...
