Free State High School held its 16th annual University Book Awards Recognition on May 16 and honored eight outstanding college-bound juniors who excel in academics, extracurricular activities, leadership and community service. McDonald’s presented Ruth Mania a college scholarship at Free State’s senior recognition ceremony on May 6. In May 2012, Ruth’s brother, Julias, received a McDonald's scholarship at Southwest Middle School. Julias lost his battle with cancer this school year, but Tina Mitchell, counselor at Free State High School, approached McDonald's with an opportunity to honor Julias by offering Julias’ scholarship to his sister, Ruth. Ruth plans to pursue a degree in nursing and hopes to return to Africa and work with those in need of medical attention. Week 1 campers from Girl Scout Day Camp at Hidden Valley donated a total of 475 items to Just Food during their annual Day Camp community service project. In 2003 we visited every Jayhawk statue displayed in and around Lawrence as part of the "Jayhawks on Parade." We retook the picture last month when our children were gathered for graduations. Kevin and Coleen O’Malley welcomed donors, volunteers and leaders of the Douglas County chapter of the American Red Cross for a reception to celebrate completion of the chapter’s annual Heroes Campaign. The O’Malleys served as co-chairs for this year’s campaign, which generated a record $54,000 for the chapter’s local programs and services. Jane Blocher, executive director, presented a plaque of appreciation to the O’Malleys at the event.
