Free State High School held its 16th annual University Book Awards Recognition on May 16 and honored eight outstanding college-bound juniors who excel in academics, extracurricular activities, leadership and community service. McDonald’s presented Ruth Mania a college scholarship at Free State’s senior recognition ceremony on May 6. In May 2012, Ruth’s brother, Julias, received a McDonald's scholarship at Southwest Middle School. Julias lost his battle with cancer this school year, but Tina Mitchell, counselor at Free State High School, approached McDonald's with an opportunity to honor Julias by offering Julias’ scholarship to his sister, Ruth. Ruth plans to pursue a degree in nursing and hopes to return to Africa and work with those in need of medical attention. Matthew Goble, left, was promoted to captain in the U.S. Army. He is a JAG officer currently stationed at Camp Casey in South Korea. Adrian Cade and 12 of his Emporia State classmates were inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International, the nursing honor society, on May 7. The ceremony took place at Washburn University. Adrian is sixth from the left. He currently lives in Lawrence. The picture was submitted by his mother, Mary Cade.

The Baldwin High School girls 4x400 meter relay team, which won the state championship, set a new 4A state track meet record with a time of 3.58.7, which was also the fastest time in this event ran by all classes this season. Tom Mach, a Lawrence author, received notice that he was a finalist in the International Book Awards competition for his historical novel, Angels at Sunset.

The Lawrence Breakfast Optimist Club hosted an end-of-school cookout for the students and staff at New York Elementary School on May 21. The "chefs" are joined by a couple of satisfied customers.

The DC Outlaws 10U baseball team recently won second place in the Hawaiian Hitfest tournament in Kansas City and first place in the Capital City Showdown tournament in Topeka.

Week 1 campers from Girl Scout Day Camp at Hidden Valley donated a total of 475 items to Just Food during their annual Day Camp community service project. Pictured are the winners of the campsite food drive challenge. The Mulberry campsite and aides, pictured mostly in blue and yellow, donated 86 items and the Hillside campsite, pictured mostly in orange and yellow, donated 75 items.

This crowd-pleasing French car has been invited back. It will be on display at the 2013 Art of the Car Concours on June 23, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In 2003 we visited every Jayhawk statue displayed in and around Lawrence as part of the "Jayhawks on Parade." We retook the picture last month when our children were gathered for graduations. CASA and Citizen Review Board volunteers of the year were honored by Judge Kittel and Judge Shepherd on April 29 at the Oread Hotel. CASA volunteers are appointed by the Court to serve as special advocates for abused and neglected children in protective custody. Students, teachers and elders gathered at the Haskell Medicine Wheel on June 21 to pray for the protection of threatened Native-American sacred places including the adjacent Baker Wetlands. Kevin and Coleen O’Malley welcomed donors, volunteers and leaders of the Douglas County chapter of the American Red Cross for a reception to celebrate completion of the chapter’s annual Heroes Campaign. The O’Malleys served as co-chairs for this year’s campaign, which generated a record $54,000 for the chapter’s local programs and services. Jane Blocher, executive director, presented a plaque of appreciation to the O’Malleys at the event.
