Nikki Johnson, a Kansas University doctoral student, has received a three-year, $90,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to study scoliosis in adolescents. Johnson was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 12 and had spinal fusion. She said her experience has lead to her passion to find better treatment. She is holding an example of a spine model that's made out of various plastics.

Beer and pizza may be a perfect pairing, but if you're looking to try a new spin on an old standard, remember it all comes down the ingredients. Beer can be used in batters or as a leavening agent in breads and, yes, pizza dough. Likewise, you don't need to make a pizza in order to enjoy pizza flavors. Tomato, basil, garlic and olive oil all go a long way in getting that pizza taste.
