Seabury finishes first season with win

It was Senior Night. It was Homecoming. It was historic.

In the Seabury Academy football team’s final game of its first season, the Seahawks christened their home field with a victory.

“This was kind of our ‘Everything Night,'” said Seabury Academy athletic director Eric Nelson in the final moments of a 30-12 victory against Kickapoo Nation on Thursday.

In front of a packed house on an 80-yard field on the east grounds of the school’s campus, Seabury senior Gus Wigen-Toccalino rumbled for three touchdowns, threw for another and led the Seahawks to their third victory of the season.

After dropping their first game of the year, 66-14, the Seahawks turned things around completely, winning three of their last four games – including last week’s 73-52 victory against Kansas School for the Deaf – and finishing with a record of 3-2.

Thursday’s showing was the icing on the cake. Wigen-Toccalino kicked off the scoring with two touchdown runs in the first half. He added two-point conversions onto each, and Seabury built a 16-0 lead early on. But Kickapoo stormed back in the second quarter, scoring twice to cut the Seahawks’ lead to 16-12 at the half.

Buoyed by stops on both of Kickapoo’s conversion attempts, the Seabury defense took the field for the second half more determined than ever.

“The fact that they scored those two touchdowns in the first half made us mad,” Bill Gibbs said. “We tell ourselves at halftime of every game that it’s 0-0 heading into the second half. We just really tried to focus on that today and came out to play as hard as we could.”

It worked. Seabury held Kickapoo scoreless in the second half, including two stops on fourth-and-goal attempts inside the 10-yard line.

Inspired by the effort, Wigen-Toccalino added a couple of Seabury scores for good measure. The first was a halfback pass to Gibbs in the back corner of the end zone, and the second a 21-yard touchdown run with 8:54 to play in the fourth quarter.

After the game, as the excitement and intensity of the moment began to overwhelm him, Wigen-Toccalino showed his appreciation to his teammates for helping add the perfect finish to a magical season.

“I was a little emotional,” he said. “I have never had a winning season at Seabury, and to finally get it during my senior year in a sport I love is amazing.”
