Letter to the editor: Good representation

To the editor:

I would like to commend the residents of Lawrence. You have Dennis Highberger as your state representative. I found out just last week how compassionate and thoughtful he is. And, yes, I know this is all old news to all of you.

I went to the Kansas Legislature last week, having read the horrifying anti-LGBTQ+ bills 2320 and 2321. I delivered a letter to all who sponsored the bills and also to those on the judiciary committee. By the end of the day, I had been able to talk with my representative and three people on the judiciary committee. One had not read the bills yet, one believed that same-sex marriages were a bad thing, and then there was Rep. Highberger. He knew what I was talking about and he understood my anger and frustration with these bills. He knew that even if they never go anywhere, these bills are having a very negative effect on folks.

On Saturday, Equality Kansas of Metro KC invited several legislators, including a sponsor of these bills to have lunch in Lansing to discuss the negative impact of these bills. One legislator showed up on very short notice: Rep. Highberger, all the way from your fair city.

His compassion and thoughtfulness made us realize how fortunate the residents of Lawrence truly are.

Thank you, citizens of Lawrence, for electing him to the Kansas House of Representatives.

Barbara Williams,
