Letter to the editor: Road responsibility
To the editor:
When is the City of Lawrence going tell what is really going on with Queens Road and why they need a road that is 75 feet wide from sidewalk to sidewalk? The driving lanes are 21 feet wide — one going south and one going north with a 6-foot median from the new roundabout at Overland Drive going almost all the way to Sixth street. The median will keep me from turning south to get to Sixth Street which is half a block away. The city is going to take some of my front yard to build the road and then tax me for the road. I heard as much as $ 20,000 plus interest over 10 years. I am retired and 80 years old, and this is not right.
They call it a benefit district in order to pay for the road. There are only two groups that are going to benefit from the road: the city and the developers — the city from the taxes and the developers from the rent they collect. The city should take the tax money and pay for the road that they should have improved 18 years ago when they took Queens into the city. The city and the developers created this problem, so they should pay for it.
