Should the Lawrence school district try to serve more local foods to students?
Asked at Massachusetts Street on October 23, 2012
“ Definitely. … It supports local businesses and farmers so your tax dollars stay in the community, and the food is fresher.”
“ Yes. I think it’s healthier for kids. It teaches them to create lasting habits.”
“ I would say yes. If they would follow up with where the food was from it would help (the students) to better understand the food network. ”
“ I could see integrating it. It would maybe work best in fall when things are in season.”

No. Kids should have a positive impression of local food. It should be fresh and taste good. The school cafeterias would negate both of those qualities.

Back in the day all school lunches were prepared using only local foods. Cars were not real popular until Henry Ford started mass production. Then came along busy family schedules and the rush of daily lives. Then came along budget cuts at the schools and already prepared foods for convenience. Maybe parents would like to volunteer to feed all the kids again - Any Volunteers?
