Do you think parks or streets in Lawrence should be named for community members who have passed?

“I like that idea — I’m for being able to perpetuate a legacy.”

“I hesitate because where’s the cut-off? You have to be really good for the community to deserve a park. I wouldn’t object to the proposal, but it wouldn’t be high on my priority list.”

“Someone who serves the community for a long time deserves recognition.”

“I think it’s a good way to honor someone. It becomes a special place for the family.”

“I’m OK with parks, but streets — it gets confusing. Like 15th Street/Bob Billings, that confuses the geography of the city.”

Let them name roundabouts, parks, and NEW streets after whomever they want. Don't rename existing streets!

I yhinks it would be fitting to name East 11th Street where it passe the old Sale Barn "RoeDapple Way". Just a half block or so . . .

+1003. Sorry, originalbob. I just stole 1003 of your points. Now, I have to go pass on - somewhere.

Sure. Just quit renaming things. Who thought that was a good idea in the first place?

RoeDapple 5 years, 10 months ago

I kinda figured autie would tell us renaming streets is all passé or sumpin.

Renaming streets is all the rage, Turn the page, turn the page, Mass is now Tip the sage, Turn the page, turn the page.

Leslie Swearingen 5 years, 10 months ago

That means you won't be able to use a map to get somewhere because the newly named street.. isn't on the map. If you tried online you would just find out that street does not exist. How often do new maps come out? How will MapQuest find out about the renaming? Will first responders not know where to go?
Just wondering.

I like streets that are named in alphabetical progression on a theme. Makes it easier to get around. Ashes, Burn, Char, Draw, Extinguish, Fire. Grate. Alabaster, Balsalt, Chert, Diatomite. For the little ones and the foxhounds it teaches the alphabet. I do like the states, even though they aren't quite in the order of admission.

Why wait until they're dead? Let's name streets and parks after living residents so they can attend the ceremonies. They can lead parades down "their" streets. After all, Lawrence needs more parades.

I like it, Mr. Lee. How 'bout Compton Corners for 9th & NH? We can hold the party at the Masonic Temple.

JackMcKee 5 years, 10 months ago

Better yet, let people charge tolls on their roads. Wouldn't it be cool if every time someone drive down Bob Billing's Parkway his heirs receive $.25?

Filled with roundabouts for the obligatory tail-chasing expeditions...

Ah, Arash-Felloren written by Robert Taylor. This is a book that you really want to buy and not just get from the library. For example: When he looked up again, the man had not moved though there was an ... Artisan? Miner? It was a game he played whenever a stranger arrived and he flattered ... I knew I had read that before and at first thought it was William Gibson as it does sound like something he would write. How about a street, named the Spindle or Zion Way?

Stephanie Hull 5 years, 10 months ago

Absolutely agree -- especially NO to renaming numbered streets!

I'm fine with naming schools, parks, rec centers, etc. after folks who made a significant contribution to the city, but absolutely no to renaming streets.

"Community member" is basically the grown-ups version of "popular kid".

Richard Heckler 5 years, 10 months ago

What constitutes a deserving person?

  1. An unknown school bus driver unknown school janitor unknown Mom who has worked 80 hours a week raising children unknown single father who has successfully raised the children and paid their college
  2. an unknown ballet instructor from the Arts Center
  3. an unknown anybody that has been paying taxes for the last 50 years
  4. the unknown fireman who has never been chief

Don't all of the above give as much to the community as any politician or "important others"?
