Have you heard about the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA)?
Asked at Checkers, 2300 La. St. on January 18, 2012
“I know it’s gotten a lot of attention. I heard about it on NPR — Wikipedia, Google and other sites have been down today to protest it. I signed the petition because I feel that it puts unnecessary restrictions on internet use and there shouldn’t be those harsh limitations on speech online.”
“I hadn’t heard about the bill or protest, but I’ve seen those commercials against piracy.”
“No, but I know a lot of corporations are anti-piracy.”
“I’ve seen posts about the plans for a blackout on Wikipedia and some other sites but I’m not sure I could give an informed opinion on the bill.”

Sorry, that's the best answer I can come up with without wikipedia. I called Ron and he was as stumped as I.

"I called Ron and he was as stumped as I."
But still, somehow, managed to talk for 48 minutes straight without pausing.

Yes, delicious soup. And Pipa, the much hotter sister of Princess Kate. ;)

Yes, I have heard of SOPA. Also PIPA (Protect IP Act).
Have you heard of SOPA on a ROPA?

I have mixed feelings about the bill(s) since I've had my intellectual property stolen and posted on someone's for-profit site. I hate censorship and don't mind a certain amount of "fair usage," but there needs to be limits. It'll be interesting to see how this all shakes out.

No, I was engaged defending the liberty of the people from having foreign substances injected in to their bodies by the ever more totalitarian government.

You need to quit bucking the system and do your duty as an American. Get in line and get your shots; the government knows what is best for you. Your insolence puts us all at risk.

This whole time I thought it was spelled SOPAPILLA. What do you know?
Sopapipas are soooo yummy.

Not true - there was real concern that they would fly through even as recently as last month. Only in the last couple of weeks has there been some trepidation, and only since Sunday have the tides started to shift. Some of us have been following this for a looooong time.

Of course, Google is huge, but they were pressured to do this---not at all obvious that they would have done it on their own.

Yes, I have heard of it. I filed it away under "things I could care less about"

Most of the people behind this are highly-educated, well-washed people who care deeply and passionately about free expression and innovation.

As I understand it, the concern with SOPA is that a suspicion of a minor copyright infraction could be an excuse for shutting down a whole website without recourse---which has to make one wonder what the true motive is behind it.

I forgot and tried to use Google yesterday with the result that I couldn't close my browser, turn off my internet connection or even restart or shut down my computer---had to use the switch to cut it off.
Did anybody else have any problem like this?
RoeDapple 1 year, 4 months ago
YES ! Both my wife and my laptops did the same thing within minutes of each other. Had to pull the batteries to shut down.
Conspiracy?

And my friends think I'm paranoid---

Google worked fine. They just put a black rectangle over their logo, they didn't shut down. I used it all day.

Roe, did your wife protest when you pulled her battery? Is she related to Commander Data?

"Wiki closed up shop yesterday" - T_O_B
No they didn't. But you did need to deactivate geolocation in your browser or use a proxy server. I was physically in Topeka yesterday, but Google and Wikipedia thought I was in Albania...
BTW Lee Marvin's brothers name is Bob.

Hell if I do, Hell if I don't . . . (sigh)

T_O_B, "At least Wiki put forth a little effort. All Google did was put a black box over their name." Did you think they would forfeit $86 million?
Jimmy Wales decision did drive a good portion of 304 million people to try to contact their Senator or Congressperson, effectively crashing the Senate.gov servers for a while.
