Are you worried about the depletion of helium on our planet?
Should we ban the non-essential use of helium?
What are you afraid of?
RonHolzwarth (Ron Holzwarth) replies…
Actually, the use of helium for simple amusement is certainly not wise in the long run.
There are many scientific experiments that require the use of it, and the supply of it is finite. Very few outside of the scientific community seem to be aware of that.
So what do we do with a lot of the helium that we do have, instead of reserving it for research? Fill balloons with it for amusement.
But on the bright side, if it ever costs over $500 to full a small balloon with helium, which it might, I think that particular use of it will decline a great deal.
Gandalf (anonymous) replies…
Err Ron,what happens to the helium in a balloon when it pops?
H_Lecter (anonymous) replies…
The known supply of Helium is estimated to last 25 years. Currently, it is extracted from inside the Earth with other gases. To extract it from the atmosphere is prohibitively expensive.

An air puck of mass 0.028 kg is tied to a string and allowed to revolve in a circle of radius 1.1m on a frictionless horizontal surface. The other end of the string passes through a hole in the center of the surface, and a mass of 1.9kg is tied to it. The suspended mass remains in equilibrium while the puck revolves on the surface. The acceleration of gravity is 9.81 m/s2 .
What is the magnitude of the force that maintains circular motion acting on the puck?
Answer in units of N.
RoeDapple (anonymous) replies…
I think a blood vessel just burst in my left brain . . .
autie (anonymous) replies…
zero. It would take no force to maintain on a frictionless surface.
Aiko (anonymous) replies…
Details:
air puck mass = .028kg
radius of centripetal motion = 1.1m
suspended mass = 1.9kg
acceleration = 9.81 m/s^2
Equations:
Centripetal Froce = mass * velocity ^2 / radius of circular motion = mv^2 / r
Magnitude of Force = mass * gravity = mg
Solving:
Magnitude of Force: (1.9kg)(9.81m/s^2) = 18.64 kgm/s^2 = 18.64N
Since the magnitude of force can be set equal to the centripetal force, we can also find the velocity of the puck
mg = mv^2/r
18.64N = mv^2/r --> (solve for v^2)
18.64N (r) = mv^2
[18.64N (r)] / m] = v^2 --> (solve for v)
square root {[18.64N (r)] / m]} = v
v = square root {18.64 * 1.1m} / 0.028kg
v = 27.1 m/s

I would go for Mary Ann. She likes it here in Kansas, and she's probably a good cook.
Ginger is high maintenance, which I know all about, and the first chance she gets she's going to run away to Hollywood. But by then you'll probably be happy to get rid of her anyway.
labmonkey (anonymous) says…
Why are there so many plot holes in time-travel movies? For example. in Back to the Future, Marty's mom has the hots for him in 1955, not knowing he is her son. When Marty gets his parents back together and goes back to 1985, wouldn't he find George and Loraine divorced? Wouldn't George be just a little suspicious when his third kid looks strikingly like the guy Loraine had the hots for in high school and accuse her of cheating? Also... Doc invented a time machine from a DeLorian, yet cannot refine some oil into gasoline in 1885? Also, how did Doc build a time machine from a train using 1890's technology? He would have to dig up and make plutonium useful himself for the nuclear reaction needed for the flux capacitor..

Why won't the City/County commissions and the USD 497 BOE permit taxpaying voters to have more say in how are tax dollars are spent. Taxpayers work hard to provide tax dollars to the cookie jars therefore it stands to reason that the providers should have a ton more influence.
How?
By placing new housing projects,retail projects,street projects and warehouse projects to the voters for approval?
Will the USD 497 BOE forbid bypassing the USD 497 taxpayers on big spending projects such as the PLAY investment,closing of schools etc etc etc.
Do we live in a Democracy or not? After all I seriously doubt that 75% of voters trust local elected officials to make decisions free of special interest group influence. It seems local elected officials have little respect for the majority.

Actually, it ought to be pretty easy to provide both. A simple interface toggle could unwrap comments into strictly sequential order or roll them back into nested threads. Users could choose. "the interpretation of unreferenced comments separated from their contexts" is a major problem, I would think. If you haven't defined what you're talking about, nothing would make any sense!
I fail to see any advantage of seeing comments in strictly sequential order. There would be nothing to reference what a posting is alluding to.
For instance, consider any speech ever given. If one were to separate every sentence and then present them all in a random order there would be no logical thread, and none of it would make any sense.

I would want to ask if the Brownback folks are deliberately putting out low state projected income figures, in order to justify cutting state programs & services for the poor while also justifying an unneeded tax increase on the poorest of Kansans?
All that one has to do, to further a legislative agenda against the poor, is to create projected state incomes that are lower than realistically will occur and you have an excuse to do as you please to the poor on the assumption that we can not afford to help them because there are no funds for such.
The currant excess in state income is not the first of these excesses since Brownback took office & yet SRS offices are targeted & tax increases on the poor / cuts in benefits for the poor are sought by Brownback.
mikekt (anonymous) says…
Ditto for not being able to afford state arts funding.
All that they need to do is to underestimate the Ks. States' income, to justify doing anything and everything to any group.
How convenient is that one!!!!
