“I don’t see a reason why it should.”

“If it moves, getting there would be a little more difficult. Space is important but location is more important than space.”

“Yes, I think they need to be mindful of the citizens and be mindful of property values.”

“Not really. I just think the area it’s at serves it better.”

I think it should operate as a "dry" shelter NOW at it's current location. The residents should have local ties and should be seeking employment.

I think city hall should be moved to the Borders building, that is more accessible to the public. Then city hall should be a homeless and rehabilitation center.

Yes, out of town & DG Co, as far as it can go. What is it going to take to get the measage to the shelter that they are not wanted here? They are draining our bank accounts with their monetary needs.

"It looks like this is my lucky day! I'll take "The Rapists" for $200"

Julie Craig 4 years, 11 months ago

FTW and +1 Can I do that if it's not a "sports" article?

somedude20 4 years, 11 months ago

"That's "Therapists." That's "Therapists," not "The Rapists." Let's skip "Therapists" and try "Household Objects", for $400. And the answer is, "You usually drink water out of one of these."

the problem isn't going to go away but maybe mr. Henderson could, i think that would be a step in the right direction. i understand that he truly cares but turning it into an industry is not the answer. it would be interesting if they did a study (4 students with pens and paper, not a $50,000 commission study) and interviewed all the people showing up at the shelter for a 3 or 4 day period and find out how many lived in Lawrence or Douglas county in the last six months before becomming homeless or showing up at the shelter. we cannont keep importing the problem.

If it's all about property values, Ms Sheri, let us understand, that when undesirable uses arise in buildings, the neighbors will see a drop in value which will equal lower property taxes. The greedy "Joneses" in this town should love to pinch a few more pennies back, especially from taxes. It only matters if they plan to keep selling their houses and moving into bigger badder cribs. Some people in this town just want to hate the homeless, and I think it has to do with the levels of freedom one can experience not being tied to a 285,000 dollar home mortgage.

geekin_topekan 4 years, 11 months ago

Ms. Sheri, if you haven't noticed; The homeless are citizens. We could assign them phony titles if that would make you happy.

kernal 4 years, 11 months ago

Citizens of where? Most of them are not Lawrence residents.

geekin_topekan 4 years, 11 months ago

And where exactly do you get that information?

Source please.

LadyJ 4 years, 11 months ago

Why not use the Community Building, doesn't it have a kitchen? Close to the police station too.

swksgirl 4 years, 11 months ago

I am amazed at how people think that if you move the shelter out of downtown, magically the homeless people disappear too!! TA-DA, look what we can do Ma, NO hands, Its magic!! Holy cow, if only moving buildings would take care of social issues then we could solve all the worlds problems and put all these building on an island out in the ocean. I bet if we move the jail out of Douglas county then all the criminals would leave, and if we moved Bert Nash out of town, then all the mentally ill would disappear as well!

50YearResident 4 years, 11 months ago

And if we build a new $7 million dollar facility for the homeless to accomadate 500 homeless it would soon magically fill up within 30 days with all Lawrence residents.

adagio 4 years, 11 months ago

It's a case of "turning a blind eye". People don't want to think about this issue, so if it's taken away it's not their problem. This isn't a Lawrence issue - this is a country (or worldwide) issue. I just can't believe how mean/cruel/inconsiderate people can be with regards to this issue. We've seemed to forgotten that we're all people.

when i was there in 1996 i never notice homeless people. i think all the homeless peeps you see are former students of KU who graduated with Masters but due to economy they because homeless, or it could be dropouts From

adagio 4 years, 11 months ago

There definitely needs to be a newer facility that can meet the variety of needs of all of the homeless who need to access the Shelter's services, i.e. food, shelter, etc. My fingers are crossed and I really do hope that this issue is resolved soon. Good luck!
